Poet's Poems

Boy
You weren’t the first I’ve seen
losing some part of yourself
in the park.
It’s common for those
self-assured skeptics,
teenagers they’re called,
to wander in through the tunnel
they’ve marked as their own,
and heap scorn upon the
world they won’t change.

Our generation is skilled
at keeping still, gazing
at cosmos and drinking up
what they will, with
five senses.
But your stillness was beyond
a living still; your chest
put up no shivery fight
against the rain chill.

I read in the paper, later,
that you were an Elliot,
one of a few in this generation
of dying timeless titles.

But as I stood to consider
your night-soaked form,
you were no Elliot to me.
You were a boy,
turning cold,
and I knew you
wouldn’t want any
phone call made that
might save you.

thank you! this is so exciting to log on and see one of poet's poems! it really does connect the two plays so strongly it gives me chills.

i love this verse especially:

Our generation is skilled
at keeping still, gazing
at cosmos and drinking up
what they will, with
five senses.
But your stillness was beyond
a living still; your chest
put up no shivery fight
against the rain chill.

The first time I read it, I took cosmos to be the universe and all of its infinite parallel universes. It made me think of the stars and the rain and Elliot looking up there wanting to catch it all on his tongue (as Sam wondered if he did in his last moments). And then I read it again and I saw cosmos as cosmo... as in cosmopolitans! What a different meaning!

I love the idea of "living still." Brings much to mind. Still life paintings. Stillness as in peace. As in the peace Elliot was searching for, perhaps we're all searching for. Still as in, haven't yet finished. As in, it's a miracle that any of us are living still... no moment is guaranteed...

Lot's of good stuff packed into those words!

Thanks so much for writing!

Write more, if you've got it. And anyone else who wants to take a stab, please do!

I feel a play starting to take shape!!!
